Joie Chitwood named Executive Director of the 2025 Truist Championship at The Philadelphia Cricket Club
Longtime golf and motorsports executive with extensive local ties to guide PGA TOUR’s return to Philadelphia in 2025
PHILADELPHIA – The Truist Championship announced today that Joie Chitwood has been named Executive Director of the 2025 event, set to be hosted at The Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course, May 5-11.
Chitwood joined the PGA TOUR in May 2023 when he was named Executive Director of the 2026 Presidents Cup, which will be contested at Medinah Country Club outside of Chicago. Prior, he spent two years as Vice President of corporate development for Arnold Palmer Enterprises, which included his role as Tournament Director of the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. In that role, he was tasked with driving revenue growth and operational excellence, which delivered record results for the longtime event, founded by Arnold Palmer. He also served as the Interim Executive Director of the 2024 Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches when event ownership transitioned under the umbrella of the TOUR’s Championship Management division.
“It’s truly an honor to be named Executive Director for the 2025 Truist Championship at famed Philadelphia Cricket Club,” said Chitwood, who will maintain his Executive Director duties with the 2026 Presidents Cup over the next nine months. “Our goal will be to engage this market from day one to help create an event the entire city can take immense pride in. From hospitality sales to local vendors, partners and volunteers, the 2025 Truist Championship will be a true team effort and will show once again why Philadelphia is truly one of the world’s great sports towns.”
The bulk of Chitwood’s extensive career in the sports industry has been in motorsports, working for the Daytona International Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
He is the grandson of American stuntman Joie Chitwood, who is best known as a daredevil in the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show. The tour lasted over 50 years visiting large and small towns throughout the country, with all three generations of Chitwoods bearing the nickname “Joie” taking part in the death-defying automobile stunts. The family was based out of nearby Reading, Pennsylvania, and the first stunt show was performed at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1943.
“It’s a thrill to come full circle back to Pennsylvania where my family has so many deep-rooted memories,” Chitwood said. “This is a special place to me, and I think that added connectivity to this region makes it a unique opportunity and one I’m eager to dive into.”
Travis Rhodes, who is Truist’s regional president for Pennsylvania and New Jersey, said it was fitting that a hometown boy earned the opportunity to be the executive director of the very first Truist Championship.
“We can’t wait for the players to tee it up in Philadelphia next spring and we look forward to an exciting event for teammates, clients and golf fans around the world,” Rhodes said. “What a great way for Truist to live its purpose of inspiring and building better lives and communities.”
The Truist Championship will return to Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2026. The event is being held in Philadelphia in 2025 due to Quail Hollow serving as host of the PGA Championship next year.
